Amazon and Delta Air Lines will deploy the Amazon Leo satellite network across hundreds of aircraft, delivering high-speed, low-latency in-flight Wi-Fi starting with 500 aircraft in 2028.

Next generation in-flight Wi-Fi

Amazon has signed a multi-year agreement with Delta Air Lines to deploy its Amazon Leo satellite connectivity technology across hundreds of aircraft, providing next-generation in-flight Wi-Fi to tens of millions of passengers.

The rollout will begin in 2028, with initial installation on 500 Delta aircraft, delivering high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi from gate to gate. As with Delta’s current policy, Leo-powered Wi-Fi will remain free for all Delta SkyMiles members.

The agreement expands the companies’ existing relationship and builds on Delta’s use of Amazon Web Services (AWS) for key technology systems.

What is Amazon Leo?

Amazon Leo is powered by a constellation of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit, positioned roughly 370 miles above the Earth’s surface.

This places the satellites more than 50 times closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellite systems, helping reduce latency compared with legacy in-flight connectivity solutions.

Each Delta aircraft will be equipped with a single purpose-built phased array antenna capable of download speeds up to 1 Gbps and upload speeds up to 400 Mbps.

The aviation-grade antenna is based on Leo Ultra, Amazon’s fastest commercial phased array antenna currently in production.

Expanding connectivity for Delta passengers

Ed Bastian, Chief Executive Officer of Delta Air Lines, said the agreement supports the airline’s long-term global growth strategy.

“Delta’s future is global,” said Bastian. “This agreement gives us the best, fastest and most cost-effective technology available to better connect the world today, and it deepens our work with a global leader that shares our ambition to build what’s next—creating even stronger human connection for our people and our customers for years to come.”

Passengers will be able to access internet services similar to terrestrial networks, including streaming video, playing games, uploading content and staying connected with colleagues, friends and family while in flight.

Amazon expands satellite connectivity use cases

Andy Jassy, President and CEO of Amazon, said the partnership highlights the potential scale of the company’s satellite connectivity platform.

“We’ve designed Leo to provide high-speed internet to the billions of people on Earth without reliable connectivity, and this agreement with Delta is a great example of the impact and scale of the technology—bringing even faster in-flight Wi-Fi to tens of millions of passengers who fly Delta every year,” said Jassy.

“People increasingly want to stay connected wherever they are in the world, and Leo’s speed and reliability is going to have a big impact for businesses, governments, and consumers. It’s going to make the in-flight experience so much better, and it’s going to change what’s possible while traveling.”

Expanding AWS-driven digital infrastructure

The agreement also deepens collaboration between Amazon and Delta beyond connectivity.

Delta previously migrated significant parts of its technology infrastructure to AWS and currently uses the platform to power reservation systems, operational tools and customer-facing applications.

Under the new agreement, the companies plan to integrate AWS, Amazon Leo, artificial intelligence and other Amazon technologies to enhance the customer experience across the travel journey.
