Verizon expands 5G infrastructure for FIFA World Cup 2026
As the “Official Telecommunication Services Sponsor for FIFA World Cup 2026™” and “Official Tournament Supporter for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™,” Verizon is deploying its technology across stadiums, FIFA Fan Festival™ locations and surrounding communities to support what FIFA describes as a ‘fully connected tournament experience.’
With fans expected to use more than 50 terabytes of data inside a stadium for each match, Verizon said it has made significant network upgrades across host venues.
The company added more 5G spectrum to increase capacity by an estimated three to five times across all host stadiums. It also installed thousands of antennas under seats, along with large ball-shaped antennas to deliver targeted 4G and 5G coverage for fans in higher sections.
To improve connectivity beyond stadiums, Verizon also deployed nearly 140 small cells and temporary cell sites to support mass transit, watch parties and community events surrounding the tournament.
This infrastructure is designed to help fans stream highlights, check player stats, make mobile concession payments and share live experiences on social platforms without disruption.
FIFA and Verizon partnership
Nacho Fresco, Director of Technology at FIFA, said Verizon’s role is critical to delivering the tournament experience.
“Our partnership with Verizon has been pivotal in realizing the vision for the FIFA World Cup 2026™—a truly connected and unforgettable event,” he said.
“The deployment of Verizon’s advanced technology will not only elevate the fan experience inside and outside the stadiums but also ensure a powerful, long-term digital legacy for the host communities. This is about using innovation to bring the world closer to the game of soccer.”

Private 5G and fiber to power global broadcasting
Verizon’s network will also support broadcast transmission for billions of viewers worldwide.
Its high-capacity fiber and wave services will power the Broadcast Contribution Network (BCN), enabling FIFA to centrally collect and process ball and player statistics while delivering high-definition media broadcasts for the International Broadcast Center (IBC).
Private 5G networks will also be deployed inside host stadiums to support critical operations, including enabling Lenovo Referee View body cameras that provide referees’ on-field perspectives for global audiences.
This same infrastructure will extend to FIFA Fan Festival™ locations, where Verizon’s 5G and fiber connectivity will support public-facing operations and seamless digital experiences.
5G Fixed Wireless Access supports tournament operations
It will also use 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) to support pop-up activations, retail and merchandise locations, logistics operations and back-office capabilities across the tournament footprint.
Using Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband Network, FIFA will be able to establish high-speed connections quickly and efficiently across temporary sites.
The companies will also provide 5G network slicing for applications requiring priority performance, and its broader security solutions are designed to help protect the tournament’s digital infrastructure and maintain operational integrity.
Verizon focuses on long-term digital legacy for host cities
The investment extends beyond the tournament itself, with upgrades to local network infrastructure designed to support surrounding communities long after the final match.
These improvements are intended to strengthen access to reliable, high-speed internet for education, healthcare, public safety and economic development.
Kyle Malady, CEO of Verizon Business, said the project reflects Verizon’s broader mission.
“The FIFA World Cup 2026™ is more than just a tournament; it’s a moment where technology and community unite,” he said.
“Seeing our advanced 5G and fiber networks create seamless, unforgettable experiences for fans, and knowing our investment will leave a lasting digital legacy for the host cities, truly underscores our commitment to connecting people to what matters most to them.”

Public safety and small business support also expand
Verizon Frontline is also supporting public safety agencies preparing for the tournament, providing mission-critical communications for first responders.
It has been working with host cities for more than two years, drawing on three decades of experience supporting public safety during major events and emergency operations.
Verizon is also supporting local small businesses through its Small Business Digital Ready program, working with FIFA host committees to help businesses prepare for increased tourism and consumer demand.
The initiative includes support for Wi-Fi solutions, point-of-sale systems, connectivity upgrades and digital training resources to help businesses manage higher customer volumes during the tournament and beyond.
